Ranbir was born to the celebrated duo of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu. Both his parents were extremely famous actors in their prime days. He was then admitted to Bombay Scottish School in Mahim. Ranbir was a poor student in his academics and had very little interest in getting the education right. Later, he completed his pre-university education from H.R. College of Economics and then flew to New York to get on the nerves of filmmaking. He learned filmmaking from the School of Visual Arts and at the same time improved his acting flair in the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.
He flew back to Mumbai to make an integral mark in the Bollywood. He was assigned as an assistant to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his movie, Black.
