Karismatic Entry in the Bollywood
Karisma Kapoor first appeared on the silver screen at the mere age of 17 in the movie, Prem Qaidi. The film was a moderate success, and her role in the movie was lukewarm. In 1992, she ran into a string of 5 back to back flop films, out of which most of them were with actors like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Movies like Police Officer, Jagruti, Nischay, Sapne Saajan Ke, and Deedar were all Bollywood disasters. The only hit film of 1992 for the gorgeous actress came in the form of Jigar alongside Ajay Devgan.
She then featured in four films in 1993, out of which, only one managed to stand out at the Box office. Muqabla was a commercial hit while other films like Sangram, Shaktiman, and Dhanwaan failed to perform at the Box Office. Although most of the films Karisma acted in resulted as disaster or flops, many directors were smart enough to recognize her talent and chose to cast her in their future projects.
The actress then hit a purple patch in her career by featuring in a total of 9 films in 1994. However, to the actress’s dislike, 4 films like Prem Shakti, Dulaara, Andaz, and Aatish all were big time failures at the Box office. Finally, a hit film with David Dhawan’s Raja Babu crossed her path. She shared the screen with Govinda in the film which was commercial as well as critical success. Other hit films in the year comprised of movies like the cult comedy, Andaz Apna Apna, Suhaag, Gopi Kishan, and Coolie No.1.
Release after release, Karisma kept hitting the silver screens with several films. She acted in a total of 10 films in 1996. Raja Hindustani was the most successful ones out of the many. Karisma acted in hit movies like Judwaa, Hero No. 1, Dil Toh Pagal Hain, Mrityudand, etc. Dil Toh Paagal was extremely successful amongst the audiences as well as critics, where Karisma was found sharing the screen with Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit.
She was offered a supporting role in the biggest hit of the decade, Kuch Kuch Hota Hain which she snubbed. There was no release in the preceding year. However, she made a strong comeback in 1999 with super-hit films like Hum Saath Saath Hain, Biwi No. 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, and Jaanwar. It was one of that years, where Karisma couldn’t put a step wrong.
She followed her glorious run at the Box Office with movies like Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Fiza, and Chal Mere Bhai. Her performance in Fiza was well-received by the critics. Fiza saw her collaborating with actors like Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, and Isha Koppikar. She was part of another critically acclaimed film, Zubeida, where the actress’s performance was well-received by the critics. After the release of Baaz: A Bird in Danger, she vanished from the mainstream industry. She was seen in the Bollywood circuit in cameos and judging dance reality shows. Her attempt to comeback failed ridiculously. It is believed that Karisma will be seen alongside Salman Khan in a cameo appearance in Varun Dhawan’s Judwaa 2.
