Karan Johar was born to the famous producer Yash Johar and his homemaker wife Hiroo Johar. His father was the person who founded the Dharma Productions in 1979. Johar was born in Mumbai on 25th May 1972 to a family deeply rooted in the Indian Film industry. He completed his schooling from the Green lawns High School in Mumbai. He then took admission in the H.R. College of Commerce and Economics and completed his masters in French from the respected college. Before, making any further career plans, Johar had it pretty set-up to hit the ground running in the Hindi film arena.

He started his career as an actor in 1989. He first featured in a serial titled Indradhanush where he played the role of Shrikant. The serial was aired on Doordarshan. After his acting debut, he took a sabbatical and decided to enter the directorial world. According to one of his interviews, he deemed Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, and Sooraj R. Barjatiya as his idols. Johar was very much into numerology and thus made sure he titled his films with the letter K. However, after Lagey Raho Munna Bhai was released, he gave up his practice owing to few scenes in the movie which strongly opposed such practices.

Karan’s first steps towards the Bollywood’s filmmaking world was as an assistant director to Aditya Chopra for the film. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Johar was also the costume designer for the film while he consciously learned from the veteran director, Aditya Chopra.

Johar then decided to debut as a director for the film titled Kuch Kuch Hota Hain in 1998. The film had an ensemble cast of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherji, and Salman Khan in a cameo appearance. It proved to be a blockbuster hit and received positive reviews from the critics.
